This is an online Training.

Birth to 5 years is an important time in a child's life. In just 5 years a child's language progression grows significantly from non- verbal cues to verbal communication. Teachers who effectively use story time and book reading to develop emergent language and literacy skills stimulate connections in the brain that lead to positive child outcomes. In this sessions participants will explore the stages of language development, developmentally appropriate expectations for children at each stage (0-5) and guidance for selecting books and manipulatives to enhance story time and increase vocabulary.

This workshop will take an in depth look at how book reading can play an integral part in the language development of children birth to five and beyond. The goals of the presentation are to assist practitioners use developmentally appropriate storytelling strategies, select age appropriate books, and how to make storytelling a social routine found in every area of the classroom. To reach these goals the presenter will introduce the six stages of language development and how children display them as they grow. The presenter will share examples of appropriate books for each age group and what practitioners should look for when selecting books. Participants will be able to demonstrate content knowledge through role play, guided small and large group discussion, and think, pair and share activities.
