The Growing Brain: Everyday Play will introduce the participant to the importance that play has in young children’s lives, providing a rationale for significant opportunities for play in the curriculum and a critical aspect of learning and development. Different types of play will be explored as well as how children learn by both guided and free play.

Play is the way children learn how objects in the world work, how people think, feel, act, and provides opportunities for problem solving. Play helps in building relationships, developing critical thinking skills, creativity, and imagination. Play also helps children self-regulate their behavior. These concepts will be developed and explored through an experiential approach as well as the use of PowerPoint presentations and videos.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and discuss the stages of play and their development in young children
  2. Develop skills to observe how children play and follow their lead in play
  3. Compare and contrast play experiences that are guided and free
  4. Evaluate core skillsets children develop through play and ways to promote them
